The fine weather is expected to hold until late Sunday for holiday makers enjoying Wellington Anniversary weekend in Wairarapa.
"This is one action-packed weekend and perfect for people wanting to get out of Wellington for a few days and experience all the different things the Wairarapa has to offer," said Destination Wairarapa marketing manager Barb Hyde.
The evening WWI airshow at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton on Saturday will commemorate the Joyeux Noel, a time during 1914 when soldiers on the Western Front put down their weapons for one evening to celebrate Christmas with each other.
The show will feature aircraft from the Vintage Aviator collection, one of the largest collections of WWI original, reproduction and replica aircraft in the world and includes the Fokker D. VIII, or the "Flying Razor" as it was known to Allied pilots.
It will also see the return of the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car from the 1968 movie starring Dick Van Dyke, offering rides and photo opportunities for donations to charity.
There will also be free vintage vehicle rides in WWI ambulances, tanks and troop carriers, live entertainment, food and beverage stalls, and full commentary.
Gates open at 3pm with rides from 3.30pm and the airshow beginning at 4.30pm.
Those with a penchant for wine and food will be well catered for on both days with the Meandering Vineyard Lunch on Saturday and TK Day at Te Kairanga Winery on Sunday in Martinborough.
The Meandering Lunch (sold out) will see the owners of four family-owned, award-winning boutique vineyards share their experiences and passion.
People can meet and chat with the owners of Croft Wines, Coney Wines, Julicher Estate and Te Hara Estate, and savour their wines and enjoy exquisite food.
Sunday is family-friendly TK Day, which showcases food from the Wharekauhau Country Estate, wines from TK, Machiatto coffee and refreshing gelato. Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic lunch while face painting and balloon sculpting will be available for children.
Popular band Uncle Monkey will entertain during the day, and tickets are $30 adults, $5 children aged 8-17 with under-8s free.
Tranzit is also offering a pickup and drop off service from the Featherston railway station.
Jazz legend Rodger Fox will return to Carterton on Sunday, for an afternoon of summer jazz at St Mark's Church, accompanied by seasoned songster Erna Ferry. The show runs from 2pm to 4pm, and costs $10.
Sunday also sees the third round of the 2012 Jetpro Jetsprint Championship, held at the Tauherenikau Racecourse.
For those just wanting to chill out and enjoy the scenery, take a trip out to Riversdale Beach, 45 minutes drive east of Masterton, to watch the next generation of surf lifesavers in action.
