There are many wonderful beauties and hidden visual treasures beneath the surface of the earth. Few others in comparison to the population of the world will have seen the things that you will be able to see while caving. There are fantastic scenes hidden beneath the surface of the earth. However, if you are going to seek out these photogenic scenes, there are several things you should keep in mind for your safety. The first rule of caving is that you should never do it alone. Never rationalize yourself into going alone. This is dangerous and many people have disappeared and presumably lost their lives this way. It is important that if something happens, someone will know and will be able to bring assistance. Even something as simple as twisting an ankle or breaking your arm, can have serious consequences while caving. If these things happen, you will not be able to make it back to the entrance on your own.

As you are starting out, it is likely that you will be learning many new things. It is a good idea to take someone experienced who will not get lost with you until you learn how to navigate the caves yourself. The best plan is to take two others with you. This way when something happens, one person can go for help while one stays with the injured person. It is also much more likely that one of you will remember the way out. Another good safety precaution is to tell at least one person where you will be caving and when you expect to be home. That way if something happens to all of you, someone will be able to come searching for you. If no one knows where you are, they will not be able to send you help. Another mistake that many beginner cavers make is climbing a rope hand over hand. This is impossible to complete and make it out of the cave. You will get too tired too quickly and then you will be stuck hanging onto the rope for dear life. If you will be traversing pits, make sure you take the time to learn real climbing techniques from the experts. In addition, make sure that you get the proper equipment to climb.
It is also a good idea to never use a flashlight as your main source of light because a lot could happen to your flashlight. Lanterns are even touchier and should never be used for caving at all. The best option is to wear a helmet with a head lamp. You are less likely to drop this and the helmet will protect you from falling rocks or bumping your head on a low ceiling. In addition, headlamps are more resistant to breaking and will leave your hands free so you can climb and get over rocks. Never enter a cave with only one source of light. Take several backup lights with you and make sure they all work before you get started. If you end up deep in a cave with no light, it is much more likely that you will injure yourself and never find your way out. Even things as simple as glow sticks would provide enough light to let you find your way out of the cave. However, it is a good idea to take a brighter light as your primary backup light. Some cavers believe that wearing a helmet hinders their ability to move and see. However, a helmet can and will save your life while you are spelunking. In addition, it is a very good idea to make sure that someone is carrying more water and food than you need.
A first aid kit is also essential for a safe journey through the caves. It is an even better idea to have everyone carry spare food and water. If something happens and you are stuck in the cave for a few days you will be very lucky and grateful to have this kind of equipment to rely on. If someone gets separated from the group, he or she may need this extra food, water, and first aid as well. Boots are also suggested for spelunking. These boots should have deep lugs and strong ankle support as you will be going over a lot of rocks. Tennis shoes simply will not cut it when going to visit the caves.
