In addition, headlamps are more resistant to breaking and will leave your hands free so you can climb and get over rocks. Never enter a cave with only one source of light. Take several backup lights with you and make sure they all work before you get started. If you end up deep in a cave with no light, it is much more likely that you will injure yourself and never find your way out. Even things as simple as glow sticks would provide enough light to let you find your way out of the cave. However, it is a good idea to take a brighter light as your primary backup light. Some cavers believe that wearing a helmet hinders their ability to move and see. However, a helmet can and will save your life while you are spelunking. In addition, it is a very good idea to make sure that someone is carrying more water and food than you need. A first aid kit is also essential for a safe journey through the caves. It is an even better idea to have everyone carry spare food and water. If something happens and you are stuck in the cave for a few days you will be very lucky and grateful to have this kind of equipment to rely on. If someone gets separated from the group, he or she may need this extra food, water, and first aid as well. Boots are also suggested for spelunking. These boots should have deep lugs and strong ankle support as you will be going over a lot of rocks. Tennis shoes simply will not cut it when going to visit the caves.
